MACKENZIES FLAT PICNIC AREA

Public BBQ

A lovely picnic area on the river at the mouth of Lerderderg Gorge, with open lawns to spread out on, picnic tables and easy access. It is the starting point for the gorge walks - anything from an hour to five, with a few river crossings and a steep loop that rewards taking a map. The catch is water: the river dries to puddles over summer, so time a visit for after a downpour if you want a swim. Facilities are basic. The drop toilets are clean when quiet and unpleasant on a busy hot day, and there is no tap or basin at all, so pack accordingly. It is day use only, no camping, and a mobile black spot once you head into the gorge. The carpark fills remarkably fast on long weekends. Bull ants are everywhere.
